The London International Development Centre (LIDC) is a new and unique collaborative project bringing together social and natural scientists from across the University of London's six Bloomsbury Colleges - Birkbeck, Institute of Education, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Royal Veterinary College, School of Oriental and African Studies, and The School of Pharmacy. It undertakes original interdisciplinary research and training to tackle complex problems in international development.
At the 'No Goals at Half-time: What Next for the Millennium Development Goals?' conference, Development experts delivered a mixed verdict on the validity and progress of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and suggested further action. They explored how to combine their diverse academic disciplines in new ways to help achieve a more integrated approach to the global development framework. The event held at Birkbeck on 5 November was a timely assessment of the MDGs at the mid-point towards their target date of 2015.
The conference was LIDC’s response to the heightened interest in the MDGs following the major meeting held in New York on 25 September to address the faltering progress towards the targets, especially considering the global economic downturn and rising food prices. The MDGs, due to be achieved in seven years, were formulated after the UN Millennium Summit in 2000 and their targets were all drawn up in relation to baseline data from 1990.
